Complete Ferret Foods

Q) Though I have always been an advocate of feeding flesh, fur and feather to my ferrets, I am well aware that the modern complete ferret foods are claimed to be a good substitute. What is your opinion? T. WARHAM By email

A) When dry foods first came on to the market I was always wary, and when I initially fed biscuit to my ferrets, I had to ensure that whatever biscuit I used was suited to the animals’ digestive systems. The vast majority of complete ferret foods on today’s market are fine but beware of some of the cat and dog biscuits, as they are deficient in vitamins and minerals and also have less protein content. Ferret food has developed extensively over the last decade or so, and I feed my ferrets on it during the hot summer months, especially when I am travelling round the country. If you want to feed this diet to your animals, I would advise introducing it gradually with some meat, so that they can be slowly weaned on to neat biscuit. They may be a bit picky at first or take to it straightaway.
