SNH urge deer managers in Dumfries and Galloway to shoot muntjac on sight

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has announced a “shoot on sight” policy on muntjac, after two were spotted by a deer manager in Dumfries and Galloway.

The non-native deer have spread rapidly across England and Wales over the past 40 years, causing extensive crop damage, but have not yet become established in Scotland.

SNH’s Jamie Hammond said an established population of muntjac could cost the country up to £2million a year.

“We have contacted all the neighbouring landowners,” he said, “and urged deer managers in the area to remain vigilant and shoot muntjac on sight if they get the opportunity.”
