New visitors' centre to promote project

The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) celebrated the 20th anniversary of its flagship research farm in Leicestershire by unveiling a state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly visitors’ centre.

The Allerton Project at Loddington Farm was founded in 1992 to reconcile modern commercial farming with wildlife conservation, and to evaluate the contribution game management makes to farmland biodiversity.

Among the new building’s innovative features are solar panels, rainwater harvesting, wool and straw insulation and an innovative “grasscrete” car park.

Speaking at the opening, minister for agriculture Jim Paice applauded both the GWCT and LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) for researching and putting into action forward-looking agricultural and conservation techniques that have successfully influenced Government policy.
