Volvo to detect deer

Volvo is refining its radar and infra red camara pedestrian detection system to detect animals as well as people

In an effort to reduce collisions between vehicles and wild animals, particularly deer, Volvo is refining its radar and infra-red camera pedestrian detection system. Currently offered on six of its cars, the improved system will be able to detect animals as well as people and other obstructions in the road, reports Ian Morton.

Collisions with deer kill a dozen car occupants annually in the UK. “This is an important area to prioritise,” said Andreas Eidehall, of Volvo Car Corporation’s active safety department.
