Pheasant season extended to make up for cold weather

The Irish Government has confirmed that the open season for cock pheasants and woodpigeon will be allowed to continue until the end of February under the 2011 (Wild Birds) (Open Seasons) (Amendment) Order. The last day of the season for both birds in the Republic of Ireland is normally 1 February, though woodpigeon can be shot for crop protection until later in the year.

Des Crofton, national director of the National Association of Regional Game Councils, told Shooting Times that the unprecedented extension had been granted at its request after lobbying from the shooting community following recent temporary suspensions.

He said: “We had severe weather conditions, which effectively took almost a month out of the season. Not everyone within the shooting community agrees with it, but we are a large organisation and we get different views, so there is nothing strange about it.”
