Scientists have been studying snipe using high-speed video

Using high-speed video, UK scientists have discovered how the male snipe makes its drumming mating call. “The tail feather has special adaptations, which means it acts just like a flag blowing in the wind,” said Roland Ennos, from the University of Manchester’s Faculty of Life Sciences. “The feathers have a weakened hinge region in their rear vane. The birds dive to increase their speed and make a more attractive higher-pitched sound.”
