Time is running out for shooters to respond to DEFRA's controversial consultation on the gamebird code and cages
DEFRA’s consultation on the draft Code of Practice on the Welfare of Gamebirds Reared for Sporting Purposes closes next Monday, 18 January, several weeks short of the three months normally allocated to public consultations of its kind. Shooters are being encouraged to respond immediately to the consultation on the code, which is set to have a significant impact on game rearing in England — including the introduction of a ban, or not, on raised laying cages used for the production of pheasant and partridge eggs.
The consultation was launched in late November last year, and in line with similar consultations, would have been due to finish in early February had DEFRA not taken the decision to cut short the consultation period by several weeks in order that the new code can be brought into force on the next common commencement date for such statutory legislation, 6 April. This is in line with a previously stated aim to bring the new code of practice into existence in the life of the current Parliament.
