A former soldier walked free from court after a judge gave him a 12-month suspended sentence

A former soldier who handed in an abandoned sawn-off shotgun at a police station — four days after discovering it — has walked free from court after a judge gave him a 12-month sentence, suspended for one year at Reading Crown Court on 18 December.

Paul Clarke from Surrey was previously convicted by a jury of possession of the gun, which he said he had found in a bag in his garden. Mr Clarke had faced the prospect of a five-year prison term when he was sentenced.
