The DI is urging landowners not to grant stalkers exclusive rights to deer management

Poole Basin Deer Management Group has rejected recent findings that landowners are not managing deer properly

Poole Basin Deer Management Group (PBDMG)has rejected recent Deer Initiative (DI) research that controversially concluded that few private landowners in the Poole Basin are willing to take responsibility for deer on their land.

“Landowners in this area almost without exception adopt responsible management of their land and discuss cull numbers with their stalkers and deer managers,” PBDMG’s Jan Andrews told Shooting Times.

“PBDMG has encouraged stalkers and deer managers to speak to their tenant farmers every month and to keep notes on the discussions to help clarify where problems may be or could occur,” she added.

The research prompted the DI, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation, in conjunction with the Country Land & Business Association, to launch a national campaign (News, 23 September) urging landowners around the country to take a more active role in the management of UK deer populations. The group wants landowners to draw up deer management strategies that do not grant stalkers exclusive rights so that additional stalkers can be brought in if cull targets are not met.
