This year's Midland Game Fair saw 89,000 fieldsports enthusiasts pass through its gates

Almost 90,000 fieldsports enthusiasts recently descended on Weston Park for one of the last game fairs of the season
The Midland Game Fair, held on 19 and 20 September at Weston Park, in Shropshire, welcomed 89,000 visitors through its gates this year.
“The Midland Game Fair is the annual meeting place for fieldsports enthusiasts, which creates a unique atmosphere,” Countryman Fairs’ Ian Harford told Shooting Times. He added: “Business was brisk despite the economic gloom and everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.” The Midland Game Fair is renowned for its profile of leading fieldsports championships and this year was no exception. Sunday offered the opportunity for visitors to watch numerous world championships come to a finale. Champion shooter George Digweed, from Kent, won the 6th Mitsubishi Motors World Series Clay Shooting Championship, driving away in a brand new Mitsubishi L200 Trojan pick-up.
The grand final of the inaugural Mitsubishi Motors Gundog Championship, which offers the biggest prize in the sport — a new Mitsubishi Outlander car — was also held on the Sunday. The Championship pits the UK’s best scurry handler against the UK’s fastest working test handler. This year it was 72-year-old Fred Tompkinson, from Wales, and his black Labrador, Lucy, who claimed the title against 2007 Richa Premier Gundog League Champion Simon Fowler, from Gloucestershire, and his golden retriever, Tully.
The European Field Target Championships was won by Mike Williams, who posted a phenomenal clear round of 50/50 on Saturday to put himself on target for the title. Another strong 46/50 on Sunday gave him a total of 96/100 and ensured he stayed ahead of John Costello, of Thorn Dell Field and Target Club, in County Durham, who fi nished on 94/100.
