Professor Thirgood was known for his groundbreaking research

Former Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) scientist Professor Simon Thirgood died in Ethiopia on 30 August, aged 46, when the building that he was in collapsed during a storm.

Professor Thirgood was known for his groundbreaking research into the ongoing conflict of managing moorland for driven grouse shooting and the conservation of birds of prey.

His Langholm moor-based research culminated in a landmark publication, Birds of Prey and Red Grouse (1997), which was co-authored with Professor Steve Redpath.

The GWCT’s Dr Nick Sotherton worked closely with Professor Thirgood when he was a lead scientist on the Joint Raptor Study from 1992 to 1997. He told Shooting Times: “While he was with us, he emerged as an exceptional scientist who combined natural fieldwork skills with a thoroughly analytical approach to the science.”
