Natural England (NE) has launched a consultation named All Landscapes Matter, looking into the management, protection and planning of all landscapes in England.
As part of the European Landscape Convention the first international treaty devoted exclusively to the management of landscapes in Europe the consultation proposes nine new policies, including involving the public in landscape management on a greater level and promoting better landscape design.
The consultation document states: NE is committed to a future where all Englands landscapes are managed sustainably and are highly valued, distinctive expressions of local identity.
This will increasingly require a multi-functional approach to landscape management.
Putting the All Landscapes Matter principle into practice will therefore require a much better understanding of the diverse ways in which different landscapes matter, as well as to whom they matter.
This move follows the State of the Natural Environment report in May 2008,
which demonstrated that the natural environment, particularly those landscapes
that sit outside protected areas, are increasingly under many pressures.
Comments on the consultation must be received by 13 March and should be sent to andy.wharton@naturalengland.org.uk.
