More than 90 people from 30 wildfowling associations attended the East Coast Wildfowling Conference, held on 27 September in Danbury, in Essex.
The key themes covered by the five presentations were land management, consents, the coastal footpath, the results and reliability of scientific research into disturbance, land purchase and the Humber case.
In reference to coastal erosion, Paul Miller of the Environment Agency (EA) spoke of the EA's legal obligations under the Habitat Directive to create compensatory habitats.
He also referred to the massive erosion that has already occurred, the EA's support for landowners and the possibilities for partnerships with wildfowling associations.
Dr Chris Gibson spoke for Natural England (NE) on the issues of consents, coastal access and research on disturbance.
Dr Gibson claimed NE is not concerned about the few birds shot by wildfowlers, but is concerned by the problem of disturbance.
However, the results of recent research into disturbance, which Bill Parker from Suffolk County Council also spoke of, are neither clear nor quantifiable.
Even more alarming is that it was clear that the results can be presented to show almost any foreshore activity in a negative light.
