Shooting Times 'Countryman' columnist, Fred J. Taylor, died on 7 May, at the age of 89.

Angling, ferreting and countryside enthusiasts have paid tribute to the author who, to many, epitomised the best in the worlds of angling and ferreting.

Course fishing fan, Chris Tarrant, told Shooting Times Fred taught him everything he knows: “It is a great loss. I first met him as a young boy on the Kennet when he explained to me about currents and where fish would lie waiting for food to come down to them. I fished with him in Canada - even into his eighties when his enthusiasm was still boundless and we threw a great party to celebrate his being awarded the MBE earlier this year. His contribution to fieldsports was massive and we have lost a dear friend.”

Fred was awarded the MBE in January for his services to angling after he, his brother Ken and cousin Joe, developed a new and unique method of fishing that helped anglers catch more and bigger fish.

As a lifelong angler, game shooting enthusiast and countryman I was deeply saddened to hear of Fred J Taylor's passing. To people of my generation Fred was and still remains an inspiration and hero through his writing . Although I never met him I feel as many others surely do that I have lost a frined and companion. Please pass my condolences to is family. I shall be raising a glass of sloe gin to him over a meal of game pie
