A firearms incident involving a gamekeeper and poachers, which took place on 17 April 2006, is being heard in court.Gamekeeper Jonathan Cannon, aged 56, of Hadlow, in Kent, and co-defendant Paul Jeffrey, aged 38, of Aylesford, Kent, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on 22 April, charged with possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and to cause fear of violence.

John Smith, who was then 16, is now confined to a wheelchair after a shot was fired and went through the rear of the Subaru car he was travelling in, striking him in the spine. Mr Cannon and Mr Jeffrey were out on the evening concerned controlling vermin on the land that Mr Cannon keepers. They spotted Mr Smith and four others driving away from the private land in Hadlow, near Tonbridge in Kent, after they disturbed the group lamping rabbits with lurchers.

The trial continues.
