One year on from the ban, vets in England remain in the dark about the law
A year after the 2006 Animal Welfare Act came into force in England, making it an offence to dock dogs’ tails unless they are certified working dogs and the operation is performed by a vet, the law is still shrouded in misunderstanding. A total ban exists in Scotland, while in Wales only a few specific working breeds can be docked.
“It’s a shame that one year on there is still so much confusion surrounding the legality of tail docking,” said Caroline Kisko of the Kennel Club. “A worryingly high number of vets in England still don’t realise that they can legally dock working dogs as long as this is done within the first five days of a puppy’s life and providing they have seen evidence that the dogs will be working. We think so much confusion exists because the legislation is different in Scotland, where docking is completely banned and in Northern Ireland, where the law on docking is unchanged,” she explained.
