Almost one in three dogs is overweight says the PDSA.

Nearly two million dogs in Britain are overweight, according to the charity People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA).

The report, which was published on March 6th, to coincide with Crufts, found that almost one in three dogs is overweight - an increase of 9% over the past year.

As a result, many dogs are experiencing problems such as heart disease, breathing difficulties and diabetes.

Jamie Stewart, of BASC's Gundog Advisory Committee, told Shooting Times owners need to take care their gundog does not put on weight during the close season: "Labradors and springer spaniels are particularly susceptible to piling on the pounds, so my advice to owners is to join a gundog or obedience club over the summer months, though regular long walks will ensure that your dog stays trim. If you are concerned about your dog's weight, consult your vet before making any dietary changes."
