DEFRA minister: no commercial use of Poultry Register

How do you feel about DEFRA making the information held on the Poultry Register available to outside bodies?

DEFRA's minister, Lord Rooker, has said the Great British Poultry Register (GBPR) should only be used for the purpose of fighting disease.

At a meeting with the British Association for Shooting and Conservation in Whitehall on 5 March, Lord Rooker said he would be advising secretary of state, Hilary Benn, the register should not be used for any commercial purpose or for the use of HM Revenue and Customs.

The GBPR was created in 2005 to list poultry keepers’ names and details to provide DEFRA with personal information in the event of a bird flu outbreak.

At the time, assurances were given the register would only be used for this purpose.

However, in November 2007, DEFRA launched a public consultation “on possible changes of use of personal data held on the GBPR”. It prompted great concern throughout the shooting community as the consultation sought views on using the data for tax purposes and “to facilitate mailshots from commercial companies”.
