EU to impose regulations on gundog transport

By Selena Masson, Shooting Times

Thursday, 14 February 2008

If you make a profit through picking-up, dog breeding or training, then you need to carry two new documents with you when you transport your dogs more than 40 miles.

Since 5 January 2008, new EU regulations mean that those who transport dogs as part of an “economic activity” must carry an Animal Transport Certificate and Transporter Authorisation form “if a profit is made that exceeds the general running costs of looking after that animal.”

Full-time professional trainers and breeders must adhere to the new rules, but a DEFRA spokeman stressed that initially it had not been the intention to include gundogs in the new legislation: “The EU Welfare and Transport regulations are designed principally to target all transporters of horses, cattle and poultry — not working dogs. The legislation will help to improve animal welfare transportation standards.”

For further information on the new Animal Welfare rules visit DEFRA

To find out if the new rules apply to you, consult the 14 February issue of Shooting Times.

What is YOUR opinion? Do you think these rules are necessary?
