Moors report record grouse bags

As a result of increased investment and a particularly productive breeding season, grouse moor managers are reporting record bags. Wemmergill, in County Durham, for example, recently announced that it has recorded the most successful season since records began in 1872.

Despite last summer’s flooding, a record season’s bag of 8,027 brace was noted. This follows a £5million, four-year programme of environmental enhancement and investment by the moor’s owner, Michael Cannon. Mr Cannon told Shooting Times: “I think this is a monumental achievement. Especially considering last year the moor only produced 1,200 brace and the year before that practically nothing. Since taking over the estate in 2006, we have tripled the number of staff and considerably improved the infrastructure, making it much easier to get work done. One of the biggest challenges has been mitigating sheep damage on the moor.” He added: “A lot of the moor had been neglected in the past, but I am determined to leave it in an enhanced state. I want to put something back.”

James Chapel, director of shooting at fieldsports agency J. M. Osborne, echoed Mr Cannon’s success: “I can confirm that Snilesworth Moor managed a bag of 534 brace of grouse on 25 August 2007. This is the day-bag record for the moor since records began and indeed for all the moors that fall within the North York Moors area (previously it stood at 410). The season’s bag was just over 2,000 brace, which is fantastic on a moor with only about 6,000 acres of heather.”
