The National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO) has described the way in which gamekeepers were vilified in connection with the alleged shooting of two hen harriers on the Sandringham estate as an "absolute disgrace".
This comes after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that no charges will be brought over the alleged shooting.
On 24 October, a nature warden claimed that they saw a pair of hen harriers shot at Dersingham Bog, near Sandringham.
Despite a major police search, the CPS confirmed last week that no hen harrier bodies, forensic or ballistic evidence had been found. A CPS spokesman said: "Norfolk Crown Prosecution Service has advised Norfolk police that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone over the shooting of two hen harrier birds, a protected species, at Sandringham."
A spokesperson for the NGO said: "The person who thought he saw this happen was a Natural England (NE) employee. Somebody then went straight to the press and the story exploded from there."
