The controversial Violent Crime Reduction Act (VCRA) came into force on 1 October.
However, some shooting organisations have described the legislation as "vague" and fear that it could be indicative of the government's attitude and long-term gun strategy.
The clampdown means the age for purchasing an airgun has increased from 17 to 18; that airguns can only be sold via registered firearms dealers and on a face-to-face basis; and that the minimum age for buying knives is raised from 16 to 18.
"The new measures send the strong signal that weapons on our streets will not be tolerated," commented Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith.
She said tackling gun and knife crime is a top priority for the government: "It is essential that we build on the powers that police already have in order to make people feel safer and more secure in their communities."
The rest of the story will appear in the 4 October issue of Shooting Times.
