Back from the Brink: Major conference on grey partridge

By Selena Masson

Friday, 21 September 2007

A national conference which aims to spearhead the recovery of grey partridges is being held by The Game Conservancy Trust (GCT) on Friday 5 October in Cambridge.

For the past 30 years the GCT has been conducting research into the reasons behind wild grey partridge decline. In 1996 the GCT were appointed the lead partner. Since then, a range of techniques have conclusively shown how it is possible to target recovery and thus reverse the decline of this iconic bird.

The results of the research have been implemented on the Grey Partridge Recovery Project at Royston in Hertfordshire, and have led to a sixfold increase in spring pair counts in just four years. Where farmers and landowners have followed our advice, greys have increased by an encouraging 40%.

The GCT hopes this first national conference, entitled Back from the Brink, will be the catalyst for a far wider recovery in grey partridge numbers across the country.

To book a place or for further details on the conference, which costs £25 per delegate to include lunch and all refreshments, please contact Gillian Gooderham on 01425 651019 or email: partridgeconference@gct.org.uk
