Raptor report implicates gamekeepers again

By Selena Masson

Thursday, 12 July 2007

Last week, the RSPB unveiled an updated report into raptor disappearance. The investigation has sent shockwaves through all the shooting organizations as gamekeepers are once again implicated as lead suspects.

'Peak Malpractice Update 2007' claims to "unveil a catalogue of suspicious incidents" surrounding the loss of raptors in the Peak District. Dr Mark Avery, the RSPB's director of conservation said: "The list of sickening incidents of apparent persecution in the Dark Peak continues to rise."

This update follows a report issued last year, which was rejected by two independent studies. The Game Conservancy Trust and Moors for the Future both showed that birds of prey are in fact thriving on the moorlands of the Peak District, and that their success is closely linked to management for grouse shooting.

The rest of this story will appear in the ST on Thursday 19 July.
