This year has been one of the best on record for sloes and both shooters and commercial manufacturers are reaping the benefits
It’s as essential to a day’s shooting as wellies and cartridges, and this year sloe gin makers have been blessed with one of the best fruit harvests for years. This means cupboards have been filled with more bottles of the warming elixir than usual, all gathering dust in readiness for future seasons. Sloemotion is a company in North Yorkshire which not only makes sloe gin but also sloe whisky, sloe vodka, sloe chocolate and sloe chutney (visit www.sloemotion.com).
Company owner Jonathan Curtoys told ST: “This year has been almost too good. I try to source all my sloes from the UK and this is the first year ever we’ve had to turn people offering fruit away. I get a lot of keepers and country people picking for me, and we usually need around 12 tons a year. This year it’s been great for all berries, what with the warm spring, sunny July and rainy August. It couldn’t have been better. The juicier the sloe the more flavour the product has, which is great for us, so we just hope that next year will be as good.”
